Europe bans toxic ingredients in gel and semi-permanent nail polishes

Starting September 1, 2025, a new European Union regulation will prohibit the use of certain ingredients in cosmetic products — especially gel and semi-permanent nail polishes. This decision aims to protect reproductive health and minimize consumer and salon professional exposure to potentially harmful substances.

🚫 What ingredients are being banned?

The banned substances are those classified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction). The two most concerning ingredients in the nail care industry are:

🔸 Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO)

• A photoinitiator commonly used in gel nail polishes.
• Activated by UV or LED light to harden the polish.
• Classified as toxic to reproduction (CMR 1B).
• Banned for use, sale, or application within the EU starting September 1, 2025.

🔸 Dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT)

• Another photoinitiator used in UV-cured nail products.
• Associated with carcinogenic and reproductive risks in toxicological studies.
• Also banned under the new regulation.

These ingredients are not found in regular polishes, but have been widely used in long-lasting manicures and some at-home gel kits.
